Paper Restoration From Acid Mats and Backings

Louis Godey (1804 – 1878) and Louis Icart (1880 – 1950) prints that had been attached to cards that were wood pulp based. The cards were causing chemical burning to the art, so we soaked them in water until the old adhesive released, and then carefully removed the artwork from the cardboard. We finished the restoration by continuing the soaking process in chemistry that removed all acid and the stains associated with the chemical burning.
