APPRAISALS
There are various reasons why an art owner may want to have work appraised. Those include, for insurance purposes, issues of estate and trust worth, for private sale or sale at auction, issues of inheritance, or various other personal interest reasons.
Kari Miller is certified as an International Fine Art Appraiser, so each appraisal comes with a certified document that can be used in various legal situations.
In conversation Kari may make a verbal appraisal based on her gut reaction. This might be helpful for an art owner to know whether or not it is worth pursuing further research, or a formal appraisal for purposes of sale or replacement. A verbal appraisal however does not hold legal or resale weight. If you would like to have a free 15 minute consultation you may schedule one at the link below.
An official or formal appraisal comes with a certified document, requires viewing the work in person, may take up to three weeks for Miller Fenwood to complete, and costs between $150 and $350 depending on how much research is required to simply determine the art work’s worth. Until Kari does research about gallery or studio sales, auction results, etc. she is unable to make a formal appraisal.

RESEARCH
Occasionally an art owner is interested in knowing more about their art work than they are able to acquire through word of mouth or internet searches (remember AI is interesting, and may offer some useful clues about origin or histories, but not always accurate, and prone to send amateur and seasoned researchers alike down unhelpful rabbit holes.)
Along with appraisal services we also offer research services. Fees for this separate service may vary greatly based on the number of hours required to get a full picture of the available history of a piece. Research services might include the work of various Miller Fenwood team members, over several months time. The art owner who hires us for research services will receive an extensive document in either print or digital form, detailing our findings. These documents make great supplements to gifts, inheritance or ancestry records, and may be included as a part of taxable donations, estate planning, sales, or museum acquisitions.
